I Am Legend 2 (2025) is set to follow the alternative ending of the original I Am Legend (2007), where Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) survives his encounter with the Darkseekers, offering a fresh continuation of his story.
The trailer begins with a flashback to the climax of the first movie. In this alternate timeline, Neville realizes that the Darkseekers are not mindless monsters, but sentient beings capable of emotions. He halts his attack when the alpha Darkseeker retrieves its mate from Neville’s lab, showing that the creatures have their own sense of community. Rather than detonating the grenade, Neville surrenders the female Darkseeker and escapes with Anna (Alice Braga) and Ethan to the colony upstate.
Fast forward several years. The trailer shows a much older Neville, living in a fortified settlement in the countryside. Society has slowly begun to rebuild, but the world is still dominated by the Darkseekers, who have grown more organized and adaptive. Neville, haunted by his past and the guilt of the experiments he conducted, has retired from his role as a scientist. He lives a reclusive life, distant from the world, while Anna has become a leader in the colony.
However, the peace doesn’t last. Reports emerge of new, more dangerous variants of the Darkseekers, showing signs of higher intelligence and an ability to organize complex attacks. The camera cuts to a new alpha Darkseeker, even more menacing than before, seemingly more evolved than the others.
Neville is reluctantly pulled back into action when Anna arrives with a warning: the colony is under threat, and they need his expertise to combat the evolving Darkseekers. The trailer flashes between scenes of Neville preparing for battle, scavenging through abandoned labs, and confronting the horrors of his past. There’s a new generation of survivors, but they’re not prepared for the level of intelligence these creatures have achieved.
The trailer also introduces a new character, a younger scientist played by Michael B. Jordan, who works with Neville. Together, they discover that the cure Neville developed years ago may be the key to stopping the Darkseeker evolution—but at a great cost.
The final scenes of the trailer are filled with action: Neville and Jordan fighting off waves of Darkseekers, explosions lighting up the night, and a final standoff between Neville and the new alpha in the ruins of New York City. The trailer ends with Neville delivering a chilling line: “They’re not just surviving anymore. They’re evolving.”
The tagline flashes: “The legend continues.”
