The story begins in 19th-century Spanish California, where the legend of Zorro has become a distant memory. The oppressive rule of corrupt government officials has returned, with the ruthless Governor Rafael (played by a yet-unnamed actor) terrorizing the people for wealth and power. The film introduces Diego de la Vega (Diego Luna), a man of noble birth who has spent the last few years in self-imposed exile after the death of his mentor and original Zorro, Don Alejandro. Diego is no longer the carefree rogue he once was—he’s jaded and unsure if the legacy of Zorro still matters in a world so deeply corrupted.
Eiza González portrays Elena, a fierce and independent woman from a local village who leads a secret resistance movement against the governor’s tyranny.
